Abstract
Hopf algebras arise naturally in diverse areas of mathematics. Group algebras, the universal enveloping algebra of Lie algebras and quantum groups are but a few examples of objects that enjoy a Hopf algebra structure. This talk is intended to be a very elementary introduction to this subject, the ultimate goal being to understand the definition of a Hopf algebra and its most basic properties. Prerequisites are knowing what a vector space is and the definition of a group.
