"  The Two Igniters of Several Complex Variables "
  Mustafa Ayyuru

Abstract

The results about holomorphic functions of several complex variables (SCV) can be roughly divided into two main groups:

1. Results which are generalizations of those in one complex variable, and
2. Results which are peculiar to higher dimensions or which are false when restricted to one complex variable.

Poincar e's result about the biholomorphic inequivalence between the unit ball and the unit polydisc, and Hartogs' result about the extension of holomorphic functions are two examples from group 2 which formally started SCV. In this talk, I'll state and prove these two results with the help of some results from group 1. Familiarity with complex analysis of one variable is required.
