The theory of hypergeometric functions was developed by Greene in the mid-1980s. Since that time connections between these functions and elliptic curves and modular forms have been investigated. In this talk we will introduce hypergeometric functions over finite fields and some of their applications.

The talk will be mostly self-contained so no technical background is necessary.
