"  Space scaling for the numerical approximation of problems on unbounded domains "
  Dimitar Trenev

Abstract

In this talk we'll look at the issues involved in the finite element approximation of scattering problems posed on unbounded domains. We'll discuss a simple change of variables (real scaling) and weigh its benefits and drawbacks. We will then introduce the perfectly matched layer (complex scaling) - the leading absorbing boundary condition for acoustic and electro-magnetic scattering. This will be a simple overview talk and no previous background will be required.
