* I will talk about self-similarity in group theory and its applications to dynamical systems: to the study of structure of Julia sets of complex rational functions, and the Mandelbrot set.

* We will briefly describe some application (oil industry) driven problems in the thematic area of the title in which some of my Ph.D. students are working on. In particular, we will describe some of the mathematics behind development of nonlinear structures such as fingers, solitary wave, Tsunamis, etc. and provide directions for furhter study. This will be done against the backdrop of equations of fluid dynamics. Time permitting, we may also briefly describe Green's function based fast methods for solving some classes of PDEs.
